a radio is a bridge

I was commissioned by BBC Coventry and Warwickshire to write and perform a poem about locals making a difference in their community.

making a difference
imagine this.
a radio- a bridge
connecting people who need help to people who can offer help
‘this is make a difference.
a broadcast from bbc local which celebrates communities and individuals
coming together’
‘the more we get together, the happier we will be’
this bridge brought us together in new ways
a fireman’s call to celebrate a man’s 100th birthday
was met with an outpouring of happy birthday messages
from people of coventry and warwickshire
we extinguished any hopelessness
through :
songs of praise for care workers
fundraisers for strangers
donations from shoes to bikes to food to
ppe visors created
by a schoolboy
in physics we were taught that distance = speed x time
through this law, social distancing should have made us slower
but we disrupted temporalities
with this kindness thing
swapping bridal gowns for scrubs for the nhs
nurses giving patients their phones to call their families
neighbours bringing out bins,
shopkeepers asking for what we need
the stock is full of selflessness, sacrifice and support
‘this is make a difference
a broadcast from bbc local which celebrates communities and individuals
coming together to support each other during the corona virus crisis’
imagine this.
a radio- a bridge
